About Science in Ashfield

Science is one of the subjects most often advanced as an example of how school has changed in the last decade.  Given its central position in the Government’s plans for Education as set out in the ‘Revised Curriculum’ we feel it is vital for the parents of any pupil to be as fully informed as possible about the provision of Science in this school.

This section attempts to give a brief outline of the breadth of choice of courses offered to pupils in Ashfield Girls’ High School.

All pupils will follow courses which cover the Revised Curriculum laid down by the Department of Education (NI) for Science.  The emphasis is on the practical and exploratory nature of science and the everyday applications of the content. At A-Level the pupils study Applied Science on the ‘Step-Up to Science Programme’ in conjunction with the University of Ulster.  This involves pupils attending the University one day per week where they have the opportunity to carry out practical work or listen to a lecture.  The results have been very pleasing with pupils carrying on their education at different universities following a wide range of degree courses.

The science department has 5 new laboratories, 3 of which are the new Lab 21 design. Each lab is capable of delivering science from year 8 to Year 14. We also have a large preparation room with a wide range of brand new science resources. Each of the 5 labs has an interactive whiteboard which greatly enhances our learning and teaching.  ICT work is carried out in the labs using a trolley system of wireless laptops.
The staff are at the forefront of current educational initiatives and are also involved in the examination and moderation processes for the NI Examining Board.
