A Level Applied ICT go to Fujitsu

Friday 3rd February 2012

Members of A2 Applied ICT were invited to spend a morning at Fujitsu, Holywood Road to experience how the methodologies that they learn as part of their course are practiced in the IT sector. Mrs Mullaney and Mrs McCrory (Fujitsu) collaborated to ensure that the morning was relevant and enjoyable. The girls had the opportunity to interview a range of employees, identifying their role within the organisation, including Director, Greg McDaid.

As well as networking with the Fujitsu team, the girls also had the chance to work alongside a Fujitsu employee to develop a context diagram, giving them an insight into system analysis.

Not only were the girls warmly welcomed, but they were treated to a wonderful buffet. Andrea Stone and Shannon Orr were presented with prizes for best developed website and portfolio. Shannon Boyde also received a gift voucher for her participation during the morning.

The Fujitsu team will be evaluating pupil work in their forthcoming portfolio (database development), where another prize will be available.

We would like to thank Mrs McCrory and her team for the hospitality offered and for the time they took to make the morning so enjoyable and relevant.

Civic Link - Cash for Clobber

On Thursday 2nd February 2012, the sixth year Civic Link group from Ashfield Girls’ High School were invited to present their project at the Tidy NI Eco-Schools Celebration Event in the Canal Court Hotel, NewryEco-School1.jpg.

The group run the ‘Cash for Clobber’ scheme in the school which is supported by Cookstown Textile Recyclers.

The group encourage pupils, staff, parents and friends to bring in unwanted textiles which are placed in the clothing bank. The textiles are then collected by CTR and sorted. This project not only provides clothes for those less fortunate in Africa but raises money for the school.

At the Eco-Schools Celebration Event, the girls took part in an ‘All Seasons Fashion Show’. They created outfits that would be suitable for the four seasons using clothes that had been donated to the scheme. The students were able to demonstrate that someone’s unwanted textiles can be reused as well as recycled.

Two of the students were interviewed by RTE 2 after the show and you will be able to watch their interview on news2day.
