“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers” - Shakuntala Devi, Indian writer and mental calculator
Mathematics is all around us. It is the building block of many aspects of our daily life including finance, technology, architecture and engineering. Mathematical knowledge plays an important role in understanding the content of other subjects such as science, geography, music and art.
The Mathematics Department aims to equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills required to be confident users of mathematics in a wide variety of contexts. We encourage our pupils to discover how mathematics relates to everyday life and help them to develop key skills such as problem solving and logical reasoning. As a department we aim to create a learning environment which supports and challenges all of our pupils.
At KS3 pupils have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of:
• Number
• Algebra
• Shape, Space and Measures
• Handling data
Pupils are given opportunities to:
• work independently as well as in pairs or groups
• practice their mental maths as well as written methods
• discuss the concepts they are learning about
• reflect on and evaluate their learning
A range of online resources are used to support pupils with their learning including Mathspad and Corbettmaths.
At KS4, pupils prepare for the CCEA GCSE Mathematics Examinations. Pupils will be entered at an appropriate level based on the ability they have demonstrated in previous years. Pupils will sit 1 module at the end of year 11 (45% of overall GCSE grade) and the other module at the end of year 12 (55% of overall GCSE grade
